There is no specific Treatment for TMJ disorder, so therapies only focus on alleviating pain and improving function. Many doctors suggest self care regimen to do at home that will help any pain. A dentist often focuses on the relationship between your teeth and jaw, to see if incorrect bite is contributing to symptoms. Surgery is done by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and can include many different procedures and the most common procedure done for TMJ is arthrocentesis. Always keep in mind that small only a very small percentage of TMJ disorder patients need surgical intervention. Treatments are based largely on beliefs that are not grounded in thorough scientific research as it results some patients are made worse by these treatments.
